Dapdong Cathedral
Dapdong Cathedral Cathedral with a beautiful red facade
Historic Site No. 287

In 1889, Father J. Wilhelm, a member of the French Missionary Society, was appointed as the first parish priest and began laying the cornerstone on Dapdong Hill, until the building was completed in 1897.
When it was first built, it was built in a Gothic style characterized by a straight and pointed spire, but when it was extended in 1937, the exterior of the building was stacked with red bricks and renovated in a Romanesque style featuring arches and round domes. It features a red façade, three bell towers, and a pointed dome visible from the front.

Founded in 1889, Dapdong Cathedral was completed in 1900, after 10 years of enduring many difficulties. After Father J. Wilhelm arranged for a small temporary cathedral in 1889, he laid the foundation for Dapdong Cathedral in 1890 after receiving land around Dapdong Hill as a donation, while Father Leviel (E) gathered funds for construction and built one of the accounting department buildings, which was used as a temporary cathedral.
In 1894, Father Coste (E.J.G) and Father Chargebeouf drew a basic blueprint for the cathedral, but its construction was stopped due to the Sino-Japanese War.
Construction began in August 1895 and was completed in July 1897. At that time, the bell tower was a symbol of the church, but the bell was actually installed in 1900, three years after the cathedral was completed.
