Palmido Island

Palmido IslandAn island with Korea’s first lighthouse

Palmido
Palmido Island can be visited by taking the Palmido Cruise Ship from the Yeonan Pier.
In the past, fishing boats fluttering the flags signalling big catches as they return from Palmido Island were considered to be the eighth spectacle of Yongyu, called Palmi Gwiseon (八尾歸船; ships returning from Palmido).
The white lighthouse towering on Palmido Island is located on the path of the entrance to Incheon Port and serves as an indicator for the safe operation of ships entering and leaving ports.
The existing Palmido Lighthouse has been designated as Incheon Tangible Cultural Property No. 40 after completing its 100-year mission. Currently, the newly built lighthouse is lit.
The Palmido Island cruise ship departs from the Yeonan Pier, passes Incheondaegyo Bridge, and arrives at Palmido Island.
It takes about 50 minutes one way and runs three times a day. The “Geumeoho” cruise ship to Palmido Island was introduced in 2015.
Its face is like a tiger, its body like a fish, and the whole is like a killer whale.
It is 196 tons and the maximum capacity that can be boarded is 203 people. The first floor of the cruise ship consists of a karaoke room and a kiosk, the second floor has seats for multiple people, and the third floor has an outdoor rooftop observation deck.

Information of Palmido Lighthouse
Palmido Lighthouse is the first modern lighthouse in Korea, built in June 1903. It is installed on the top of Palmido Island, which is 71m above sea level, and is 7.9m high with a diameter of about 2m.
It served as a guide to the successful landing operation in Incheon during the Korean War when on September 15, 1950, the crew of the Kelo unit (a unit of spies on North Korea) lit the lighthouse.
Visit the Palmido Lighthouse History Hall which highlights the historical value of the Palmido Lighthouse which successfully lit the way for the Incheon Landing Operation during the Korean War, and see the transformation process of the Incheon Port in a glance.
