Zelkova Tree in Yonggungsa

Zelkova Tree in Yonggungsa Temple
The Zelkova tree belongs to the Elm tree family and is spread throughout Korea, Japan, Siberia, and Europe.
The Zelkova tree in Yonggungsa is estimated to be around 1,300 years old. It is a giant old-growth tree at 5.63 meters in girth, 20 meters tall, and a crown of 16 meters, forming one pair from a grandmother and grandfather tree.

Strangely, the grandfather tree sent out its branches only to the grandmother tree.
Thus, according to the legend of the Zelkova tree, if a barren woman were to come to Yonggungsa to offer a devout prayer, drank Yaksu (mineral water) in Yonghwanggak, and prayed to the grandfather tree, she could then give birth to a baby.
