HongyemunA glorious yet lonely rainbow gate that holds history within it
City Tangible Cultural Property No. 49

Hongyemun
Hongyemun is a stone gate made like a tunnel by stacking granite stone shafts of about 13m in height and 7m in width and that cuts into the hillside of Eungbongsan Mountain in Incheon.
Construction started in 1906 and was completed in 1908, and it has been designated as Incheon Tangible Cultural Property No. 49. At the time, as the number of Japanese residents living in Jungang-dong and Kwan-dong was increasing rapidly, the gate was made by cutting off a side of the hill to expand their territory toward Manseok-dong.
The Japanese called it "hyul (hole) gate" because a hole was drilled into the mountain, but for the Koreans the gate became known as "hyul (blood) gate" because it is a place with a painful past where many Koreans suffered numerous sacrifices.

A night view of Hongyemun
Hongyemun has also been a shooting background for numerous dramas, movies, and commercials thanks to its beautiful rainbow shape and unique atmosphere.
There is an atmosphere of longing surrounding the arch-shaped stone gate, which is a mixture of granite and brick, as if someone that is missed stands on the opposite side.
The architectural style of Japan stands out, and the original characteristics of that time are well preserved.
Information on Hongyemun
Hongyemun boasts a unique style with narrow passages that make it difficult for two cars to pass through at the same time, and its height reaches the 5th floor of a building.
As soon as you pass Hongyemun, you will see a sloping road to the left, and if you follow that road, you can get a view of the whole city before you. Just as you can climb to the mountain following its strenuous slopes to reach the top and get a cool, refreshing breeze, the Hongyemun also passed through a painful history but is now considered one of Incheon's landmarks.
