This building housed the Incheon branch of the former Japan Mail and Shipping Inc., the company that monopolized shipping in the Incheon area after Korea opened its ports to foreign countries.
One of the oldest buildings from the modern period, it is a rare example of a private building rather than a religious or public facility that is well preserved in its original form.
A single truss spans the space, comparatively large for its time, and a wooden case is installed on the ceiling for storing valuable items.
