Jemulpo Gurakbu (former)

Organized in 1891 as a social club for foreigners living in Incheon, Qing, and Japan.
It first began in a wooden single-story building at 1-ga, Gwan-dong, Jung-gu, but moved to a two-story brick building at the foot of the current Jayu Park in 1901.
The designer was a Russian, Sabatin, who planned on having the amenities necessary for social activities, including a social room, billiard room, and reading room inside the building, and a tennis court outside.
However, the building's function as a social gathering place was suspended in 1914 after the removal of each nation's concession. Since then, it had been used by the Japanese veterans’ association and was renamed “Jeongbanggak”. After the country’s independence, the building was used for various purposes including the U.S. military officers’ club, the municipal museum, and a cultural center, but is now used as a cultural space that reproduces the old Jemulpo Gurakbu.
